Synthetic Bone Printer

I built this 3D printer as a part of my university studies for the MacDiarmid Institute of Advanced Materials and Nanoscience to aid PhD students in their projects for printing synthetic bone scaffolds.

It was used by Dr. Mima Kurian as a part of her studies and is featured in her paper “Towards the Development of Artificial Bone Grafts: Combining Synthetic Biomineralisation with 3D Printing”

The printer itself features a custom syringe extruders - one to print hydrogels such as the chitosan biopolymer hydrogel which are subsequently biomineralised using a mineral solution layer by layer by a second syringe extruder and the hydrogel layers were heatset using a directed heat gun.

The paper featuring this printer can be found at: https://sciprofiles.com/publication/view/7e43a86de58bcd08610696cec50c2f9f
